IIf you’ve hung out with me for a while, you know that I’ve spoken often about NOT apologizing for yourself in regards to your wants, opinions, needs, and desires… As long as you express those wants, opinions, needs, and desires with grace + kindness. Through my work, and talking on this subject frequently, I’ve realized that there is a slippery way we apologize for ourselves through over-explaining.
Perhaps you can identify with this idea. I mean… the last time you were unable to make it to an event, did you simply decline or did you give a lengthy explanation why you couldn’t make it? Or how ’bout over-explaining a decision you’ve made… like, not wanting kids or opting to be vegan or moving across the country or getting tattooed. Are you comfortable just stating that or do you feel the need to explain WHY you made those choices?
Listen, there are certainly going to be those people in your life who you love having convos with about the various choices you’ve made. And then… And then, there’s aaaaall those other instances where you really don’t want to get sucked into the 3rd degree about why you aren’t married yet. Amiright? In this episode, I’ll help you sort through where you tend to get sucked into the over-explaining trap, how to know if you really want to engage in the convo, and how to find some serious confidence in your choices, opinions, and stances.
This pod explores:
How to identify where you tend to over-explain yourself (what triggers you)
How to know when you actually do want to explain where you’re coming from, what choices you’ve made, or opinions you hold dear
How to get out of answering questions you don’t have any interest in answering… without being an asshole about it
The most common way people tend to over-explain themselves when it’s absolutely not necessary

FFind yourself dreading holiday functions with your family because it’s only a matter of time until your mom pesters you about why you don’t go to church anymore… or you aunt gives you shit for not having kids or not being married… or your uncle gets in a heated (uncomfortable) “discussion” about gun rights? Or perhaps you’re dreading the impending convo where your bro asks you for money. Again.
Even though the holidays are supposed to be merry and bright, they can often be the most stressful when it comes to dealing with our families. Enter years of baggage, a shit-ton of guilt, mix in some alcohol, and you have a family holiday that leaves you feeling like shit instead of connected with those you supposedly love the most. If this sounds any kind of familiar, all is not lost. And, believe it or not, you can totally take back your holiday experience, boundary your ass off, and consciously CHOOSE your focus this holiday. Even if your sister is an ass-hat.
This pod explores:
How to prepare for your family function ahead of time to set you up for success… even if your family is giving the circus a run for their money
What it really looks like to set up healthy boundaries and actually follow through on them
How to avoid (or end) uncomfortable conversations with the utmost grace
How to decide exactly what you want to focus on during the get-together… you know, so you can actually enjoy yourself

IIf you’re like me and much of the JJ community, the news of the Trump election was devastating to say the very least. You are likely scared and pissed and uncertain and at a loss of what actually happened and what-the-hell to do now.
In the last week, I have seen so many people hungry for guidance and support as we wade through these rough waters. How do we deal with our family and friends who voted for him? How do we continue to fight for what we believe in? What action can we take? How do I avoid a barrage of Facebook fights and insults?
And as always, when emotions run high, it can be so easy to be reactive, and in doing so, it can be easy to alienate the other side even more so. Which, as we have seen, doesn’t really get us anywhere. I wanted to create this pod as a way to get grounded and focused after what feels like a monolithic and insurmountable loss. This episode is, in no way, a bashing of the right and you will find no vitriol and acrimony. This pod is about being the people we want to be in the midst of a social climate making it increasingly difficult. If you have been having a challenge knowing what to do and how to handle yourself, please have a listen.
This pod explores:
How to allow yourself the freedom to grieve while being aware of the impact of your words and actions
How to handle social media and your friends and family who voted for Trump
How to focus on being the solution instead of colluding about the problems
A myriad of ways you can get involved and have your voice heard

PPerhaps some of the most challenging relationships we have in our lives are those with our own parents. Although we love them deeply, they are oftentimes the ones who pose the most “issues” in our worlds and who tend to drive us the most batty. You feel me? In this week’s podcast, I address a listener submission from a woman wanting to know what do if her father has caused tons of hurt to other beloved people in her life, but has always been awesome to her. Tricky, no? The same listener also wanted to know what to do with a mother who seriously bugs the shit out of her.
This sort of parental frustration is suuuuuper common and I’m sure you’re no stranger to a similar dynamic. In this episode, I offer 5 concepts to help you address a parent who is actually kind of an asshole and 5 different steps to broaching tough conversations with a parent who is driving you nuts! Unless you have a super flawless relationship with your parents (and if you do, bless you, and go thank them RIGHT NOW), then this pod is a MUST. Plus, many of these concepts can be applied to other relationships in your life which you find challenging.
This pod explores:
How to love someone deeply AND establish boundaries
How to figure out the role you want a less-than-stellar parent to have in your life
How to approach a conversation with a parent you have issues with WITHOUT being an asshole
How to figure out exactly what you need from them and how to ask for it

AAwhile back, Mr. Smith got the idea to do a pod episode where he would take control of the show and interview me on questions submitted from our pod-ience. On this week’s show we brought that idea into reality!
With brilliant questions submitted by the Joy Junkie community on Instagram, Mr. Smith quizzes me on everything from my coach training to how I knew Mr. Smith was the one, where I see The Joy Junkie in 5 years to my personal thoughts on spirituality and religion. This was an incredibly fun episode where I had the opportunity to answer personal and professional Qs you may have been curious about!
Definitely for the devoted pod person, have a listen to this insider episode where I’m sooooo in the hot seat!
This pod explores:
What/when/where I was when I had the “ah-ha” moment that made me choose the path of life coach
Where Mr. Smith and I went on our first date (and how he made a total fool of himself!)
How to deal with your family who holds polar opposite beliefs than you
How often I deal with my own inner critic and how often I self-coach (you might be surprised about my answer!)

TTime for another mailbag edition of the pod! A handful of listeners wrote in to the show asking specific Qs about how to address some challenging obstacles. One listener wanted to know how to know when you’re enabling someone in your life and when you’re just being compassionate to their plight. It can be hard to know if you are just writing off their shitty behavior as “they’re just having a bad day” and being considerate of their tough time or if that is actually encouraging them to treat you like shit.
Another listener and her sis have been struggling with their parents sloppy house-keeping behavior and aren’t sure when to speak up about what’s unacceptable and when they should just “let it go”. I mean… they are your parents after all. Shouldn’t you just “not rock the boat”? Um… yeah, I have plenty of shit to say on this one. [grin] And, finally another junkie wants to know what do about a very trying divorce decision. She is ready to pull the plug on the marriage but is terrified of the implications it may have on her children.
Be sure to have a listen as I sound off on ensuring that you are NOT enabling or accepting shitty behavior from those in your life, how to establish boundaries (yes, even with your parents), and how to weigh out super tough decisions that may affect your kids.
This pod explores:
How to speak up for yourself AND be super compassionate to others at the same time (even if you’re telling them something they may not want to hear)
How what you tolerate from others speaks VOLUMES about how you value yourself
How to make sure you at least give your loved ones the opportunity to be what you need
The most important lesson you are teaching your kids (without even realizing it)

RRecently a listener wrote in to the show asking how to deal with her volatile relationship with her parents. With a history of verbal abuse, both parents have openly ridiculed her new [very happy] relationship and seem determined to end it through a barrage of insults, guilt, and racist commentary. Although this listener is super happy in this new relationship, she is struggling with how to navigate her relationship with her parents without cutting them out of her life completely.
Dealing with family guilt trips is possibly one of the toughest challenges we face in our inter-personal relationships. For many of us, we are simply wired to NOT want to disappoint our parents and finding yourself in conflict with them can be paralyzing and terrifying at best. So, the good news: If you can relate to this listener’s tale, you’re totally normal. The bad news: You’re probably going to have to start speaking up for yourself and establishing boundaries. Kindly. And graciously. That is, if you want anything to change.
In this episode, I explore why you may feel compelled to stay silent with your parental relationships, what you can do to combat massive guilt trips, and how to know what IS your shit and what is actually NOT your shit. Your parents not agreeing with you (or approving of you) actually doesn’t have to be the end of the world. Promise.
This pod explores:
How to actually get “comfortable” with guilt WITHOUT being motivated by it (as in, NOT just saying and doing everything you think will please them)
Why you feel pulled to please your parents to begin with
How to separate what is their responsibility and what is your responsibility
How to shut down offensive and toxic conversations without losing your shit

EEver find yourself desiring deep, rich connections with your partner or your friends and family but have a hellova time letting your guard down? Maybe you even find yourself craving deep intimacy but you’re absolutely terrified to really “be seen”. I mean, isn’t it just safer to stay walled up? Well… if the other party was vulnerable first… maybe then it would be safe. Maybe. Why is it so damn hard to be vulnerable?
If you’ve found your mind spinning with the same questions, you are certainly not the exception. Many of us crave rich, soulful connections with our loved ones, but we’re absolutely paralyzed by fear of being vulnerable. So we put up massive walls, don’t let people in, and then wonder why we don’t have intimacy.
In this episode, I dig into the detrimental notions we’re inundated with in our culture, how it sends major mixed messages about vulnerability, and why you need to drastically change the narrative if you want to experience intimacy in your relationships. And guess what? You get to take as many baby steps as you need to feel safe. Promise.
This pod explores:
How our society shapes our views of safety in relationships
Challenging the notion that vulnerability equals weakness, when in reality vulnerability equals courage
My three-step system to gradually and lovingly step into vulnerability (without feeling like you might die)
The cost of not allowing room for vulnerability in your life

EEver wonder if there is free pass to tell a white lie? I mean… Is it ever okay to lie? To not be completely truthful? Okay to withhold information? I mean… what if you just really don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings? Or how about when someone asks you to go to an event you don’t want to go to… can you make up an excuse? That doesn’t count as a lie, right? Right?
This week’s pod comes to you courtesy of a listener topic submission wanting to know, “Is it ever okay to NOT be completely honest?” Perhaps you have found yourself asking the same thing. In this episode, I look at a couple key questions to ask yourself to see if you should or should not be totally truthful. I also look at the role “silence” plays in how we convey our truth (or not) to others. This pod explores:
How to navigate “hurt” in being honest
How to acknowledge the message you are sending through your silence

EEver find yourself dying for some alone time but you’re afraid if you ask for it, you will be deemed “selfish”? Know you really don’t want children but people tell you that’s “selfish”? Find yourself guilted into shit you don’t want to do because you’re afraid of appearing “selfish”? Afraid to take a weekend away without kids because… you guessed it, you’ll be “selfish’? In this week’s episode, I look at the social meaning of word “selfish”, why it is severely compromising our lives, and what to do about it. Why being selfish can actually make you happier and so much more magnetic
You being selfish can radically change your decision-making
Why you need to surround yourself with more selfish people
Why being selfish is your only saving grace
